Question & Answers

Can we climb Tirumala with shoes?

No, climbing Tirumala Hill is traditionally done barefoot as a sign of respect and reverence. Wearing shoes is not allowed for devotees who choose to climb the hill to reach the Sri Venkateswara Temple. This practice is followed to maintain the sanctity of the pilgrimage and to honor the religious customs associated with the temple.

There are designated pathways and steps for devotees to climb Tirumala Hill, and it is expected that visitors remove their footwear before beginning the ascent. The temple administration provides facilities for depositing shoes at the base of the hill, and there are also shops and vendors offering bags or pouches to carry shoes during the climb.

It is advisable to carry a small bag or pouch to keep your shoes in while climbing the hill. Once you reach the temple, you can collect your shoes or sandals and wear them again after the darshan (viewing of the deity) is complete.

Following the tradition of climbing barefoot is an integral part of the pilgrimage experience to Tirumala, and it is appreciated by the temple authorities and fellow devotees.
