The holy cemetery of Matrusri Tarigonda Vengamamba, a great devotee of the Lord, can be found to the north of the Sri Varahaswami temple, approximately two hundred metres away. This devotee was located to the north of the temple. It was in this very room that she penned the Sri Venkatachala Mahatmyam, the Dwipada Bhagavatam, and a number of other works that she later devoted to the Lord.
In the year 1817 during the month of Sravana, she was buried alive. It is said that she practises yoga marga every night in order to travel to the temple of the Lord. Even to this day, the “Muthyala Harati” ceremony at Tirumala Temple consists of Tarigonda Vengamamba, also known as “Muthyala Harati,” offering a final wave of camphor light to the Lord before closing the temple doors.
