Tirumala TTD Laddu, Sri Venkateswara’s Most Famous Prasadam
The Tirumala laddu is the world’s most famous temple prasadam, a sweet preparation made of besan, ghee, sugar, cardamom, cashew, and other ingredients, prepared exclusively at the Sri Venkateswara temple’s Potu (kitchen) and consecrated daily. TTD has a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for the Tirumala laddu since 2009, preventing imitation. Pilgrims receive complimentary laddus with most seva tickets; additional laddus are available at TTD counters at Rs. 50 per small (sannu) and Rs. 200 per large (kalyanam). The laddu cannot be bought outside Tirumala, only at TTD-authorised counters.
What makes Tirumala laddu special
- GI Tag: Tirumala laddu is one of the few religious prasadams in India with a Geographical Indication tag (granted 2009). The recipe and “Tirupati Laddu” name are protected.
- Centuries-old recipe: The current formula has been documented since the early 18th century. Vijayanagara-era records reference an earlier version.
- Consecrated daily: Each batch is offered to Lord Venkateswara as part of the seva ritual before distribution.
- Made on the hill only: Tirumala’s Potu kitchen is the only authorised production site. No franchise, no off-site preparation.
- Strict ingredient sourcing: TTD has long-term contracts with specific ghee, besan, and cashew suppliers.

Where to buy after leaving Tirumala
Tirumala laddus can only be purchased on Tirumala hill at TTD-authorised counters. Once you descend the ghat road, no authentic Tirumala laddu can be purchased.
Cautions:
- Shops in Tirupati city selling “Tirupati laddu” are not authentic. They sell similar besan laddu without temple consecration.
- Online listings claiming to deliver Tirumala laddu are fraud. TTD does not have an online delivery channel for laddu.
- For donor-tier devotees, TTD ships annual prasadam (including laddus) to the registered address, this is the only authorised remote-delivery channel.
How long does the laddu stay fresh
The Tirumala laddu has a shelf life of approximately 15 days at room temperature, longer if refrigerated. The high ghee content acts as a natural preservative.
Practical:
- Day 0-3: best taste, soft texture
- Day 4-10: slight hardening, taste intact
- Day 11-15: more crumbly, still safe to eat
- After 15 days: increasing risk of spoilage
Carrying laddus home
- TTD provides small paper boxes for purchase
- For longer journeys, transfer to airtight containers
- Keep cool, avoid direct sun and very hot car interiors
- Customs note for international travelers: some countries require declaration of food items
The Annaprasadam connection
The laddu is the most famous Tirumala prasadam, but it’s not the only one. The Annaprasadam (free meal) tradition at Tirumala feeds 100,000+ pilgrims daily. The laddu, dadhyojanam, pulihora, and other prasadams form a connected system of food-as-offering.
Common questions
Can I get Tirumala laddu online? No. TTD does not have an online sale channel. The donor-tier annual prasadam shipping is the only authorised remote delivery.
Why does it taste different from other laddus? The recipe uses specific proportions of ghee (typically 30-35% by weight), pure besan, jaggery (not refined sugar in some grades), and cashew. Plus the consecration ritual adds the spiritual dimension.
How many laddus can I buy? Counter purchase limits vary: usually 2 sannu per person, more for kalyanam (with appropriate occasion documentation). On festival days, limits may be tighter.
Is the laddu vegetarian? Yes. Pure vegetarian, prepared in temple-pure conditions. The ghee is cow’s ghee. No animal products.
Can children eat the laddu? Yes. Very young children should be given small portions due to the rich ghee content.
