Angapradakshinam at Tirumala, Procedure, Token Quota and Rules
Angapradakshinam is the ancient practice of circumambulating the Lord’s sanctum by rolling on the ground, performed by devotees as a vow or as a deep act of surrender. At Tirumala, TTD has formalised the practice into a token-based system: 750 tokens are issued on most days, with 500 tokens on Saturdays. Angapradakshinam is not performed on Fridays at the Srivari temple, the temple’s daily Abhishekam ritual begins at 4:00 AM that day, displacing the slot. Tokens are now allotted via a lucky-dip online quota released monthly through the TTD portal.
What the practice involves
Angapradakshinam (literally “circumambulation with the body”) is the act of lying flat on the ground and rolling along a defined path around the temple’s outer corridor. The complete circumambulation is performed bare-bodied above the waist for men, and in saree without ornaments for women. It is considered one of the most physically demanding devotional acts and is undertaken with prior preparation, fasting, brief practice, and mental orientation.
The path at Tirumala is marked from the start point in the Vaikuntam Queue Complex area, around the prescribed temple corridor, and ends at the Mahadwaram. Total distance is approximately 100 to 150 metres depending on the route configuration.
How to get a token
- Apply through the TTD online quota release. TTD publishes the next month’s quota release date in advance on news.tirumala.org, typically the 22nd or 23rd of each month at 9:00 AM IST for the following month.
- On the release date, log in to ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in, navigate to Pilgrim Services → Angapradakshinam → Register.
- Enter every pilgrim’s name and government-issued photo ID. Each person needs their own registration.
- This is a lucky-dip system, TTD selects winners randomly from all valid registrations. Results announced 2-3 days after registration close.
- If selected, the payment / confirmation interface opens for a 48-hour window. Complete it or the slot lapses.
Token quota and timing
- Most days (Sun-Thu, Sat), 750 tokens per day
- Saturdays, 500 tokens (reduced due to higher pilgrim density)
- Fridays, Angapradakshinam not performed; the temple’s Abhishekam ritual takes precedence
Reporting time is typically 2:00 AM at the Vaikuntam Queue Complex (varies by season; check the token slip). The actual circumambulation slot is in the pre-dawn hours, before the regular Sarva Darshan queue opens.
Re-availability rule
TTD recently extended the gap period for repeat Angapradakshinam from 90 days to 180 days. A devotee who has performed Angapradakshinam once can re-apply only after 180 days from the previous performance date. The system enforces this via Aadhaar-based registration tracking; repeat applications within 180 days are auto-rejected.
Dress code and preparation
- Men, dhoti only; bare above the waist. No shirts, kurta, or upper cloth during the act.
- Women, saree without ornaments. No jewellery, no chudidar.
Carry: token slip printout, original photo ID, a clean cotton dhoti / saree (one to wear, one as a change), towel, water bottle, and a small bag for personal items (left at the cloakroom before the act).
Practical preparation:
- Eat lightly the previous evening and avoid heavy food on the day
- Hydrate well the night before; minimal water intake immediately before the act to avoid discomfort
- The corridor surface is paved stone, occasionally damp in the early morning, expect skin abrasions on knees, elbows and forearms
- Bring a light antiseptic and bandages for after
Darshan after Angapradakshinam
Token holders receive a direct Special Entry Darshan after completing the Angapradakshinam, entry via the Supadam route, no separate ticket required. Plan to be at the temple another 1-2 hours after the rolling for the darshan.
Common questions
Can I perform Angapradakshinam without a token? No. TTD enforces the token-only rule strictly. Pilgrims arriving without a token are not permitted to perform the rolling, the corridor is barricaded for token holders only during the slot.
Is Angapradakshinam medically advisable? Consult a doctor first if you have spinal issues, recent surgeries, heart conditions, or are pregnant. TTD does not perform medical screening; the responsibility is on the pilgrim.
What if I cannot complete the full circumambulation? TTD attendants assist devotees who struggle mid-rolling; you can stop and walk if needed, but the darshan token after is still honoured.
Can elderly devotees perform Angapradakshinam? Physically possible but TTD recommends against it for pilgrims above 60 unless they have prior experience. The act is strenuous.
