Sahasra Deepalankarana Seva at Tirumala, Booking and What to Expect
Sahasra Deepalankarana Seva (literally “decoration with one thousand lamps”) is the only daily seva at Tirumala performed outside the main temple. Lord Venkateswara’s processional form, Sri Malayappa Swamy along with Sridevi and Bhudevi, is brought to the Unjala Mandapam at the south-eastern corner of the Srivari Temple, seated on an unjal (swing), and surrounded by 1,000 lit oil lamps. The ticket cost is Rs. 200 per person and the seva runs from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM daily, except on Fridays when it is performed at the Kolimi Mandapam from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
What you witness
Sahasra Deepalankarana is one of the most visually distinct sevas at the temple. The setup:
- Sri Malayappa Swamy (processional bronze idol of Lord Venkateswara) is taken in procession from the main temple to the Unjala Mandapam
- Sridevi and Bhudevi processional idols flank the Lord on the unjal (swing)
- One thousand traditional oil wick lamps are lit around the mandapam
- Annamacharya keertanas and Vedic hymns are sung by TTD veda pundits and SVBC artists for approximately 60 minutes
- The swing motion is gentle and ceremonial, not full oscillation
The lamp-lit visual is the reason this seva is also referred to as “thousand lamps seva.” It is one of the most photographed sevas at Tirumala, though photography is not permitted from inside the mandapam, sponsoring devotees can see the deity at close range for the full hour.

The release schedule varies by month. Sahasra Deepalankarana is part of TTD’s general online quota, typically released in monthly batches on the first Friday of each month for the following month, at 10 AM IST. Quota is not as constrained as Suprabhata; tickets are usually available for several days after release.
Reporting and dress code
Devotees gather one hour before the seva start time at the Supadam Q entry gate near the main temple, so 4:30 PM reporting for the 5:30 PM regular slot, or 5:00 PM for the 6:00 PM Friday slot at Kolimi Mandapam.
Dress code is traditional and enforced at the Supadam gate:
- Men: dhoti or pyjama with kurta. Shorts, jeans and skin-tight clothing are not permitted.
- Women: saree, half-saree or chudidar with dupatta.
Mobile phones, cameras and luggage are not permitted in the mandapam area. Cloak rooms are available outside Supadam.
The Friday difference
On Fridays, the seva is shifted to the Kolimi Mandapam and runs 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM instead of the usual 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM. The Kolimi mandapam has a different ambience, more open, accommodates more devotees, and is closer to the temple kitchens. Friday is also “Abhishekam day” for the main deity, which means the temple atmosphere is busier overall.
For first-time devotees who want the classic Sahasra Deepa setting, the Tuesday or Wednesday slots at Unjala Mandapam are the most representative experience.
What you receive after the seva
- One Special Entry Darshan after the seva, direct access via the Supadam route
- Two laddu prasadam coupons
- Sandalwood and kumkum prasadam packets
The total time commitment from reporting to leaving the temple is approximately 3 to 4 hours: 1 hour reporting + 1 hour seva + 30-60 minutes Special Entry queue and sanctum darshan.
Common questions
Can children attend? Yes, with their own ticket. There is no free-child rule for sevas at Tirumala, each seat requires a paid registration regardless of age.
Can I take photos of the lamp setup? No. TTD prohibits photography at all sevas including Sahasra Deepalankarana. The visual is meant to be witnessed, not recorded.
Is the Friday Kolimi slot harder to book? Friday slots historically have slightly less demand than Tuesday-Sunday because the timing (6-8 PM) clashes with the regular evening pilgrim flow. If you have flexibility, Friday is often the easier date to confirm.
What’s the difference between this and the Unjala Seva? Both involve the Lord on an unjal (swing). Sahasra Deepalankarana adds the 1,000 lamps; Unjala (Dolotsavam) is the swing-only seva at a different time slot. They are distinct ticket products.
