Sahasra Kalashabhishekam at Tirumala, The Thousand-Pot Sacred Bath
Sahasra Kalashabhishekam is one of Tirumala’s most elaborate weekly sevas, the ceremonial bath of Sri Malayappa Swamy (processional silver idol) with water from 1,008 sacred pots (kalashas) on Wednesday mornings only. The seva is performed at 5:00 AM, costs Rs. 850 per ticket, and is bookable through the standard first-Friday release of the TTD online quota. Devotees who sponsor this seva witness one of the temple’s most visually elaborate ritual displays.
What the seva involves
The setup:
- 1,008 ceremonial silver kalashas (water pots) are arranged in a yantra pattern in the temple’s specific abhishekam mandapam
- Each kalasha contains pure water mixed with traditional sacred ingredients (sandalwood, turmeric, milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar, fruits)
- Specific kalashas hold “panchamrita” (five nectars) and “panchagavya” (five products from sacred cow)
- The water has been ritually energised through pre-ritual mantras the previous night
The ritual:
- Sri Malayappa Swamy is brought from the temple sanctum to the abhishekam mandapam
- Vedic pundits chant mantras over each kalasha sequentially
- Water from each of the 1,008 kalashas is poured over the deity
- Between sets of kalashas, the deity is gently towel-dried and re-anointed
- Final kalasha completes the cycle
- The deity is then dressed in fresh silk and adorned with garlands
Total ritual time: approximately 90 minutes.

The annual Brahmotsavam Sahasra Kalashabhishekam
During the annual Salakatla Brahmotsavam (September-October), a larger-scale Sahasra Kalashabhishekam is performed as part of the nine-day festival. This is a separate, even more elaborate event, open to spectators along the procession route. The weekly Wednesday version is the year-round accessible form for sponsoring devotees.
Why Sahasra Kalashabhishekam is unique
- Scale of pots, 1,008 kalashas is unique among Indian temple abhishekam rituals; most temples use 108 or 1,001 pots
- Visual spectacle, the procession of pots and water flowing over the deity is one of Tirumala’s most visually striking ceremonies
- Spiritual potency, believed to be the highest-merit weekly seva for individual healing and family welfare
- Once-in-a-lifetime nature, many devotees aim to sponsor at least once in their life
Combining with other Wednesday rituals
Wednesday is a high-ritual day at Tirumala:
- 3:00 AM Suprabhata
- 3:30 AM Tomala Seva

- 4:45 AM Koluvu
- 5:00-6:30 AM Sahasra Kalashabhishekam (this seva)
