No, jeans are not allowed in Tirumala. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), which manages the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple, has a dress code that prohibits the wearing of jeans, shorts, skirts, or any other clothing that exposes the body.

The dress code is in place to maintain the sanctity of the temple and to ensure that pilgrims are appropriately dressed for darshan, or a glimpse of the deity. The TTD also asks pilgrims to wear clean and preferably white clothing.

If you are caught wearing jeans in Tirumala, you will be asked to change into more appropriate clothing. If you do not have any other clothing with you, you will be able to purchase some from the stalls near the temple.

Here are some of the clothes that are allowed in Tirumala:

  • Traditional Indian clothing: This includes sarees, salwar kameezes, dhotis, and kurtas.
  • Formal western clothing: This includes shirts, Pants, and Chudidhars.

It is important to note that the dress code is strictly enforced in Tirumala. If you are caught wearing any prohibited clothing, you will be asked to change.

I recently visited Tirumala in September 2023 and noticed that there were no dress code restrictions in place. Many people, both men and women, were wearing jeans, track pants, and T-shirts. It seems like the TTD staff may not be as attentive to maintaining the traditional dress code, which is disappointing considering the importance of maintaining the sanctity of Tirumala and the food quality and hygiene standards at Uchitha Anandana Satram are not up to par, and this is a concern for the devotees being served there. The cheap and unhygienic food being provided is also disappointing for those seeking a wholesome experience.
