Garuda Vahanam is the evening the rest of Tirumala’s nine-day Brahmotsavam builds toward. On the fifth night, Sri Malayappa Swamy is carried out of the temple on a fully gold-plated Garuda and taken around the four mada streets, and for a large share of pilgrims that one procession is the reason they time their whole trip to September. This guide gives you the confirmed 2026 date and timing, what the ritual means, where to actually stand, and how to plan around the heaviest crowd of the entire festival.

What Garuda Vahanam actually is

Garuda Vahanam is one of sixteen vahana sevas spread across the nine days of Salakatla Brahmotsavam. The processional deity, Sri Malayappa Swamy, flanked by Sridevi and Bhudevi, rides the golden Garuda vahanam (the half-eagle, half-man king of birds) around the four mada streets that ring the Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple. It is reliably the most attended day of the festival. TTD has reported between two and four lakh devotees on Garuda Vahanam day in normal years, well above any other vahana evening.

Why Garuda is the Lord’s favourite mount

In the Vaishnava tradition Garuda is not just a vehicle. He is a nityasuri, an eternally liberated soul who serves Vishnu, and the Sthala Purana describes him as the embodiment of speed and watchful devotion. Across the festival the Lord also rides Sesha, Hamsa, Simha, Mohini, Hanumantha, Sarvabhupala and Aswa, but Garuda is treated as the most intimate of them. The tradition holds that the Lord chooses Garuda when He wants to cross great distances quickly to reach His devotees.

Garuda Vahanam 2026: date and timing

Salakatla Brahmotsavam 2026 runs from 15 September (Tuesday) to 23 September (Wednesday). Garuda Vahanam falls on Day 5, Saturday 19 September 2026, in the evening. The procession usually steps off around 7:00 PM, once the in-temple Snapana Tirumanjanam and decoration are done, and the full circuit of the mada streets takes roughly three to four hours with stops for arati along the way.

One honest caveat: treat 7:00 PM as indicative, not fixed. TTD shifts vahana timings on the day depending on how the morning rituals and the crowd run, and the only dependable same-day source is the temple’s own announcement board and official channels.

The rituals before the procession

  • Snapana Tirumanjanam: the ceremonial bath of the processional deity.
  • Vastra Samarpana: offering of fresh vastram.
  • Alankaram: decoration with jewels, garlands and ornaments.
  • Mounting: the deity is placed on the golden Garuda in the Vahana Mandapam.

The route around the mada streets

The procession starts at the Vahana Mandapam and moves through North, East, South and West Mada Streets before returning for the descent rituals. The Lord halts for arati at the four corner balipeethams (chaturdik balipeetam), and each street has wide barricaded viewing lanes.

Planning your darshan around the crowd

Get there early

TTD advises reaching the mada-street viewing areas by 4:00 PM at the latest. By 6:00 PM the streets are usually full and movement gets restricted. Pilgrims who are elderly or have mobility difficulties should ask about the designated seating areas before about 3:30 PM, while there is still room to place people comfortably.

Where to stand

For what it’s worth, I’d take North Mada Street near the Sri Padmavathi Guest House over the head-on East Mada Street spot. You give up the straight view of the temple entrance, but the crowd is noticeably thinner and getting back out afterwards is far less of a crush. East fills first because it faces the main entrance, South looks quiet early but packs fast, and West suits anyone walking up from the Vaikuntam Queue Complex.

What to carry

  • A water bottle, even though TTD runs emergency hydration points (they get mobbed).
  • Light snacks rather than a heavy meal.
  • Pure cotton clothing; synthetic is discouraged for traditional darshan.
  • No leather items, and sandals you can slip off quickly.
  • Aadhaar or a photo ID.
  • A phone or camera for the procession only, never for the sanctum.

What you will see

As the deity comes out of the Vahana Mandapam near sunset, Vedic chanting carries the Garuda down into the streets and devotees raise their hands in salutation. The vahanam is lit by traditional torches and modern lighting that picks out the gold filigree, and the Lord rides forward-facing in golden vastram under hundreds of fresh garlands, so devotees on both sides of the street get a clear, direct darshan as He passes. Dance, instrumental music and Veda recitation accompany the procession at several points.

The rare Adhika Masa double in 2026

2026 carries an Adhika Masa, the extra lunar month, so Tirumala celebrates two Brahmotsavams this year: Salakatla in September and Navaratri in October. Pilgrims can therefore witness Garuda Vahanam twice. The Navaratri Brahmotsavam Garuda Vahanam falls on Day 5, Friday 16 October 2026.

Common questions

Do I need a ticket to witness Garuda Vahanam? No. It is held in the public mada streets and is free for every devotee. TTD does offer paid elevated viewing through Arjitha Seva slots booked in advance, but watching the procession itself costs nothing.

What darshan should I pair with it? Many pilgrims book Sarva Darshan or Special Entry Darshan for the day after Garuda Seva, combining the procession with sanctum darshan. For Brahmotsavam dates, book 60 to 90 days ahead through ttdsevaonline.com.

Can I climb the steps on Garuda Vahanam day? Yes. Both the Alipiri and Srivari Mettu footpaths stay open, but crowds are heavy, so start the climb by 4 to 5 AM to reach the top by midday.

Is photography allowed? You can photograph the procession from the mada streets. Photography inside the temple sanctum and the Vahana Mandapam is prohibited.

Where should I stay? TTD accommodation in Tirumala fills months ahead for Brahmotsavam, so the realistic fallback is a room in Tirupati with a daily trip up the hill.
