Salakatla Brahmotsavam is the most important annual festival at the Tirumala temple, a nine-day celebration during which Sri Malayappa Swamy (the processional silver idol of Lord Venkateswara) is taken around the four mada streets on a different vahana (divine vehicle) each morning and evening. The festival follows the Hindu Navahnika calendar (nine-night cycle) and is held in September-October each year. Day-by-day significance
Day 1, Dhwajarohanam: The garuda dhwajam (Garuda flag) is hoisted on the dhwaja stambham (flag pole) in front of the temple. This formally invites all gods, sages, and divine beings to Tirumala for the nine-day festival. The Pedda Sesha Vahanam (seven-headed serpent Adisesha) follows in the night procession, symbolising the deity’s primordial throne.
Day 5, Garuda Vahanam: The single largest event of the festival. Sri Malayappa Swamy is taken on Garuda, the divine eagle of Vishnu, in the night procession. The crowd density on this day is the highest of the entire year. Devotees vow specifically to attend “Garuda Seva” as a one-time-in-a-lifetime darshan opportunity.
Day 8, Rathotsavam: The wooden chariot procession. Devotees pull the ratham (chariot) around the temple by hand, considered a high-merit devotional act.
Day 9, Chakrasnanam: The Sudarshan Chakra (divine discus) of Lord Vishnu is given a ceremonial bath at the Swami Pushkarini tank. This is the festival’s spiritual conclusion before the Dhwajavarohanam (flag lowering) in the evening.
How to attend
- Walking spectator (free): The four mada streets around the temple are public. Stand or sit along the procession route. No ticket required.
- Reserved seating (paid): TTD sells reserved seating tickets for the Garuda Seva and other major day events. Booking opens through the TTD portal 30-60 days before the festival.
- Sponsoring devotee (Vahana Seva booking): TTD’s online Arjitha Seva portal offers per-vahana sponsorship, you get to be the formal sponsor of one specific vahana ritual and receive a priority darshan.
- Special darshan during festival: Rs. 300 Special Entry Darshan continues during the festival but with festival-day reduced quotas.
Accommodation during Brahmotsavam
Both Tirumala hill and Tirupati city accommodation sell out months in advance for Brahmotsavam dates. Book through ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in the moment the 60-day advance window opens. Garuda Seva day (Day 5) is particularly hard, many devotees take a same-day return from Tirupati if they cannot get accommodation.
Crowd reality on Garuda Seva day
If you plan to attend Day 5 Garuda Seva specifically:
- Reach Tirumala by 2:00 PM at the latest for an evening Garuda Seva (typical timing: 6:30 PM to 10:30 PM procession)
- Plan parking 2-3 km from the temple, closer parking fills early
- Wear comfortable shoes (TTD often allows footwear in the spectator areas, not in the temple itself)
- Carry water and snacks, vendor lines are long
- Expect 4-6 hour wait before the actual procession reaches your position
- Mobile signal is congested, pre-arrange meeting points if separated from family
The Mohini Avataram (Day 5 morning)
On the morning of Day 5, Sri Malayappa Swamy is dressed as Mohini, the female enchantress incarnation of Vishnu who appears in the Bhagavata Purana. This is one of the most photographed images of Tirumala. The temple specially crafts the Mohini ornaments and clothing each year.
Salakatla vs Navaratri Brahmotsavam
TTD performs two Brahmotsavams in some years:
- Salakatla Brahmotsavam, The principal annual festival, held in September-October.
- Navaratri Brahmotsavam, A second nine-day festival during the Navaratri period (typically October), if the calendar permits. Smaller scale than Salakatla.
Most years feature only the Salakatla edition. The presence of a Navaratri edition depends on the Hindu calendar alignment that year.
Daily Arjitha Brahmotsavam (year-round)
Separate from the annual Salakatla, TTD also performs a daily Arjitha Brahmotsavam ritual, a small-scale ceremonial reenactment available for sponsorship on any day. Booking is through the standard TTD Arjitha Seva portal at Rs. 200 per ticket.
