Sri Govindaraja Swamy Temple Tirupati, How to Reach, Timings and Darshan
Sri Govindaraja Swamy Temple is one of the most important temples in Tirupati city and the second-most-visited TTD-administered temple in the region after the main Tirumala temple. Located in central Tirupati just 1 km from the railway station, the temple is dedicated to Lord Govindaraja, considered the elder brother of Lord Venkateswara in local Vaishnava tradition. Tradition holds that pilgrims should visit Govindaraja Swamy first before going up to Tirumala. The temple is open 5:00 AM to 12:30 PM, 1:15 PM to 4:45 PM, and 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM daily.
Temple timings
| Session | Hours |
|---|---|
| Morning | 5:00 AM – 12:30 PM |
| Afternoon | 1:15 PM – 4:45 PM |
| Evening | 6:00 PM – 9:30 PM |
The temple is opened at 5:00 AM with Suprabhata Seva and closed at 9:30 PM with Ekantha Seva. The two intermissions are for ritual preparation (mid-day) and evening transition.
How to reach the temple
- From Tirupati Railway Station: 1 km. 5-minute walk, 2-3 minute auto-rickshaw (Rs. 30-50)
- From Tirupati APSRTC central bus stand: 1.5 km. 10-minute walk or auto-rickshaw (Rs. 50)
- From Tirumala (top of hill): 22 km. Drive down ghat road to Tirupati, then short trip to the temple. Total ~50-70 minutes
- From Tiruchanoor (Padmavathi temple): 6 km. Auto-rickshaw or city bus
- By private vehicle: Parking available; rickshaws and autos line the temple road
The temple’s central location makes it the most accessible TTD darshan after a train arrival in Tirupati. Many pilgrims do Govindaraja Swamy darshan within the first hour of arriving by train.
History, Sri Ramanuja and the temple’s establishment
The temple’s documented history:
- Original temple housed Sri Parthasarathi (Krishna with Arjuna in Mahabharata war) as the main deity
- 1130 AD: Sri Ramanuja (the great Vaishnava acharya) added the reclining Sri Govindaraja deity, transforming the temple’s primary worship
- 1506 AD: Vijayanagara Empire under Krishna Deva Raya expanded the complex
- 14th century: The innermost gopura was constructed (oldest surviving structure)
- 9th-10th century structures still exist within the temple complex
- Vijayanagara contributions include the central gopura and outer mandapas
The temple is under TTD administration.
The deity, Govindaraja and his iconography
The main deity Sri Govindaraja is in the reclining (sayana) posture, different from Sri Venkateswara at Tirumala who stands upright. Govindaraja reclines on Adisesha (the serpent), with goddesses Lakshmi and Bhudevi at his feet. Brahma emerges from his navel, a classic Anantashayana iconography.
The reclining deity symbolises Vishnu’s cosmic rest between cycles of creation.
Why visit Govindaraja before Tirumala
Local tradition: Lord Govindaraja is the elder brother of Lord Venkateswara. As elder, he is to be honoured first. The pilgrim circuit traditionally followed:
- Tirupati city: Sri Govindaraja Swamy Temple
- Tiruchanoor: Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple
- Tirumala: Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple
Many devotees follow this in different orders. Some sources also suggest visiting Govindaraja Swamy on the way back down from Tirumala as the conclusion of the pilgrimage.
Inside the temple complex
The temple has multiple shrines:
- Sri Govindaraja sanctum: The main reclining deity
- Sri Parthasarathi shrine: The original deity, still actively worshipped
- Sri Andal (Goda Devi) shrine: The Tamil Alwar saint-poetess
- Sri Ramanujacharya shrine: The founder-acharya who established Govindaraja’s worship
- Outer mandapas with sculptures from Ramayana and Krishna stories
The 14th-century innermost gopura has detailed Ramayana scene carvings and Krishna leela sculptures.
Annual festivals
- Brahmotsavam: Nine-day annual festival in May-June (Vaisakha month). Similar vahana-procession structure to Tirumala but on a smaller scale.
- Float Festival (Teppotsavam): Annual February-March float festival at the temple tank.
- Vaikuntha Ekadasi: January, when the Vaikuntha Dwaram (gate to heaven) opens. Special pilgrim attendance.
- Andal Tiruvady Festival: Special days honouring the Alwar saint Andal.

Common questions
Is Sri Govindaraja part of TTD? Yes. The temple is administered by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams.
Do I need a ticket to see the deity? General darshan is free. Special quick-darshan options are sometimes available; check the temple counter on arrival.
Is it true that Govindaraja is the elder brother of Venkateswara? This is the local Vaishnava tradition in Tirupati. Theologically, both are forms of Vishnu, the “brotherhood” is a devotional and ritual relationship, not a strict mythological lineage in Pan-Hindu scripture.
Can I do Govindaraja and Tirumala in one day? Yes. Morning Govindaraja (5-7 AM is uncrowded) → drive up to Tirumala by mid-morning → Tirumala darshan afternoon. A standard short-trip itinerary.
Is photography allowed inside? No, not in the sanctum. Outer mandapas and courtyards are usually fine; check signage.
What prasadam does the temple distribute? Govindaraja distributes a temple-specific laddu plus pulihora (tamarind rice) and other simple prasadams. The Govindaraja laddu is smaller than the famous Tirumala laddu but is similarly TTD-prepared.
