Ear Piercing / Ear Boring Ritual at Tirumala, Where, How, and What It Costs
Ear piercing, known traditionally as Karna Vedham, is one of the sixteen Hindu samskaras (life rituals) and is commonly performed for infants and young children at Tirumala as part of a family pilgrimage. TTD provides the ear-boring service at the Kalyana Vedika platform near the temple. The service is offered on a walk-in basis without online booking, typically charged at Rs. 50 per child, and is performed by trained TTD attendants in a hygienic environment within Kalyana Katta hours.
What the ritual involves
Karna Vedham is performed by an experienced TTD attendant or appointed Sthapathi at the Kalyana Vedika platform. The procedure uses a sterile needle or thin gold wire, with the parent (typically the father or grandfather) holding the child. A short Vedic mantra accompanies the ritual, marking it as a samskara rather than a cosmetic piercing.
The piercing is on both earlobes simultaneously where feasible. For girls, the nose piercing is sometimes performed at the same session, check availability at the counter.
Where to go
- Kalyana Vedika, near the Purohit Sangam, on Papavinasanam Road in Tirumala, the main location for ear-boring and other samskaras.
- Mini Kalyana Katta at Srinivasa Mangapuram (the Sri Kalyana Venkateswara Swamy temple location), for pilgrims who want to combine the ritual with a visit to the Kalyana Venkateswara temple before climbing up to Tirumala. TTD opened this satellite facility specifically for vow-fulfilment convenience.
Both locations operate during TTD’s standard Kalyana Katta hours: approximately 4:00 AM to 8:00 PM, though slots in the early hours are reserved for tonsuring rituals.
How to book / fee
- Walk in to the Kalyana Vedika counter at the chosen location. Bring the child’s birth certificate or any ID with date of birth.
- Pay the ritual fee at the counter, Rs. 50 per child is typical; TTD has occasionally adjusted this. Confirm at the counter.
- The counter issues a slot token. Wait at the marked area.
- When called, the family proceeds to the platform; the ritual takes 5 to 10 minutes per child.
No online booking. Walk-in only.
What to bring
- Birth certificate or photo ID showing the child’s age
- Small gold earrings (for boys: typically small gold studs; for girls: gold studs or short gold wire), the family is expected to provide the earrings; TTD does not supply them
- Clean cloth or small towel
- Antiseptic cream and a small bandage for after the ritual
- Comforting items for the child, milk, snacks, soft toy
Dress code
Same as for any TTD ritual space:
- Men, dhoti with shirt or kurta-pyjama
- Women, saree or salwar kameez with dupatta
- Child, clean traditional attire
Best age and timing
Traditionally, ear boring for both boys and girls is performed between 6 months and 5 years. TTD does not enforce strict age limits, older children up to 12 are accepted on parent’s choice, though the discomfort tolerance changes with age.
Best time of day:
- Early morning (7:00 to 10:00 AM), the Kalyana Vedika is less crowded, the air is cool, and the child is less likely to be tired
- Avoid mid-afternoon, the platform is busy with multiple simultaneous rituals and waiting time stretches
Combining with other rituals
Many families perform Annaprasana, Aksharabhyasam (writing initiation), and Karna Vedham on the same Tirumala trip. The Kalyana Vedika area handles all three rituals; total time for all combined is approximately 90 minutes. Plan the morning for rituals and afternoon for darshan.
Common questions
Is the ear piercing hygienic? TTD trains the Kalyana Katta attendants and provides sterile needles. That said, parents who want extra reassurance often bring sealed sterile needles from a hospital or pharmacy, TTD will accept the family’s own needle if presented at the counter.
Does TTD provide gold earrings? No. Bring your own. The Tirumala bazaar nearby has stalls selling small gold earrings suitable for the ritual; verify gold purity before purchase.
What if the child has a fever or is unwell on the day? Postpone. The ritual is fine to delay; there is no calendar-locked auspicious time at Tirumala. Token fee is non-refundable if you don’t go through with the ritual.
Is online booking available? No. Walk-in only at Kalyana Vedika / Mini Kalyana Katta.
Can I do ear boring outside Tirumala instead? Yes, of course, most local jewellers and pediatricians do this. Tirumala is chosen by families specifically for the religious samskara significance, not because it’s the only option.
